Job Summary
Job Summary
This position is being reposted at both the Engineer 1 Graduate and Engineer 2 Graduate level. The level at which the position will be filled will be determined based on the successful candidates' qualifications. If you applied previously it is not necessary to reapply.
This position will assist in the performance of program responsibilities in the Section of Drinking Water Protection as they relate to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Drinking Water Revolving Fund (DWRF) loan program. These program responsibilities assure the adequate operations and treatment of public water supplies in order to promote and protect the health of consumers served by such supplies.
Responsibilities may include:

  • Conduct sanitary surveys and bacteriological investigations of community water supplies
  • Collect water samples as required by federal and state drinking water rules and as assigned by Community Public Water Supply (CPWS) Unit compliance staff
  • Review plans and specifications of all projects, including DWRF proposals and make appropriate recommendations
  • Provide technical assistance to community water suppliers, department field staff, consulting engineers
  • Assist the DWRF coordinator with providing engineering and construction oversight of projects
  • Examine the environmental reviews of the public water supply improvement projects funded through the DWRF program
  • Deal with unexpected emergency situations (natural disasters, security breaches, and terrorist acts) as directed by superiors in order to ensure the safety of the public
  • Provide technical assistance to water operators, suppliers, department field staff, and others regarding the planning, design, operation, maintenance, treatment, quality control, security, and assessment of public water systems
  • Provide general information to consulting engineers and the general public on public water supplies
  • Represent the section at meetings and conferences
  • Assist in the collection of water samples and information from public water supplies for special water quality research projects.
  • Respond to consumer complaints regarding water quality, suspected waterborne illness, low pressure, etc.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Engineer Graduate 1
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field.
And
Experience communicating technical engineering information, orally and written, interpreting engineering data and information.
Water system engineering knowledge including operation, construction and design.
Possession of a Class D Driver's License.
Engineer Graduate 2
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field.
And
Two years professional level engineering experience.
A Master's degree in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. One year of para-professional engineering experience may be substituted for six months of professional experience.
Additional experience and knowledge needed includes:

  • Experience communicating technical engineering information, orally and written, interpreting engineering data and information.
  • Public water system engineering knowledge including operation, construction and design and rules, requirements and application of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Possession of a Class D Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
Resides within 40 miles of district office.
Engineer in Training certification from National Council of Examiners for engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
Experience applying common engineering practices, methods and procedures in technical engineering work.
Experience using equipment and materials in modern engineering operations.
Experience recognizing transmission risks in public health work involving waterborne diseases.
Experience effectively prioritizing workloads and meeting essential timelines for assigned project completion.
Experience reading documents, maps, gauges, equipment manuals, with computer use sufficient to operate computer/software and produce reports.
Physical Requirements
Stand and walk even/uneven or sloping ground for significant periods of time, including on snow covered ground, for up to a mile.
Lift as much as 50 pounds of equipment or samples and frequently lift from ground to waist height and from waist to shoulder height.
Work outdoors in all seasons with inside/outside exposure to weather extremes.
Perform gross and fine motor tasks, sometimes with unprotected fingers and hands, in varying indoor/outdoor temperature.
Work in small, confined spaces.
Work in loud environments for short periods of time.
Additional Requirements
Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
